fuck you espn...

it's 2 hours before the stanley cup finals, game 6. the highest rated hockey finals ever, and rated even higher than the lakers-celts series. what's on the front page of espn right now? a preview of TOMORROWS basketball game.

yes, i know that espn is owned by abc. yes, i know that nbc is showing hockey, while abc has a vested interest in basketball. still, espn used to stand for the entertainment sports programming network, not corporate shill for abc programming.

it must be finals...

for most people, finals is the time to really start cracking down and learning things about the classes they are taking. me? i start a new tv show. it's a good way to unwind between 10 and 11pm before i go to bed after working all day. so far, here's the rundown:

fall 08 - babylon 5. i never finished the 5th season, so i just rewatched the entire series (hey, it had been 12 years since i originally watched it!)

spring 09 - the office. yeah, way behind the times here. i watched the first 5 seasons in 2 weeks, then realized that jim and pam aren't nearly as fun together as when they weren't. still watching it, but i don't love it as much as i used to.

fall 09 - the simpsons/parks and rec. technically i was finishing up the simpsons. to fill in the blanks, i also watched parks and rec (which is amazing and probably better than the office in its heyday)

spring 10 - modern family. i'm 4 episodes in and i LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! it's like arrested development (which i never got into) meets soap (which i loved) - if you haven't seen it yet, stop and go to hulu right now and WATCH THIS SHIT!

that is all.

is the app store dead in the water?

i just read an article that steve jobs has no intention of bringing porn to the iphone (not a secret), but he even goes so far to plug android and its porn store. now, steve jobs is no stranger to making bold statements, and ever since he returned to apple they've been highly successful (anyone still remember when microsoft had to bail them out and mike dell suggested apple fold?), but it's also no secret that the porn industry is a significant factor in determining what is ultimately successful in the market. here's a short rundown:

vhs v betamax: check.
hd-dvd v blu-ray: check.
the internet: check.

is this going to be the end-all, be-all of the iphone? certainly not. but android is coming up fast, it has widespread support from several handset makers, you can get an android phone on every carrier, and it's getting better at a frightening rate. on the other hand, i still can't tether my iphone or have a custom sound for my text messages. plus, in case i need porn on the go, i know where i can't get it.

update: apparently i can now run android on my iphone! i don't think this would be a widespread thing, but i'd absolutely give this a shot.

james cameron, fuck you

In honor of Avatar finally leaving the theater in Davis (actually, just not in 3-D anymore, but fuck it), it's time to share the fact that this $2.7 billion grossing film is, to put it nicely, fucking terrible. from a technical perspective, it's amazing. the blending of cgi and live action is seamless and, especially in 3-D, the visuals are very impressive. However, a film is more than just the picture on the screen.

In this case, the story is a formulaic mess that even the finest actors of our time couldn't salvage, not that any of them would sign on to this abomination of screenwriting. Just because a movie is epic doesn't mean it's creative or interesting. There are filmmakers out there who can innovate more in just five seconds than James Cameron can in 160 minutes.

In comparison, Avatar is about as creative as this, except Avatar takes itself seriously.

This is the part where you should stop reading if you're easily offended or haven't seen Avatar and don't want the movie spoiled. Actually, forget that. If you haven't seen it, just read this and save your money.

The conflicts presented in the film are embarrassingly transparent. A paralyzed solider is given a new body capable of walking, could this possibly present a conflict later on in the film? A lost human character is saved and befriended by a beautiful female character of the native species, could this possibly spark a romance despite their differences? The American military metaphor is intent on raping the planet of its natural resources, while the Native American metaphor wants to coexist in peace with the planet and be left to its own devices, have we seen this storyline before? Can the heartless corporate characters be swayed by impassioned please from the sympathetic scientists, or will profit drive men to cruelty and violence? Can an outsider be accepted as a brother by a foreign culture?

If you have to think very hard about any of the above questions, you'll probably enjoy Avatar immensely. Otherwise, you'll probably find it dull and predictable.

movies in 3d on ice

saw alice last night in 3d. i've never really been enamored with the idea of 3d movies, mostly stemming from the awesome red and blue films of the past. i can now officially say that modern 3d movies are awesome. used properly, the 3d effect gives a new depth to the movie and, as a tool to augment good cinematography, really adds something. however, when things fly out of the screen and whatnot, i don't care for that - it's breaking the fourth wall and it takes me out of the movie.

also massive bonuses to the new 3d - you can do it at home if you have the glasses. i'm pretty interested to see if anyone besides disney really gets on board with this - action films would be pretty amazing in 3d.

i heart steak...

i had an extra ny strip (thick as all get out) from when my parents were here, so i did this:

http://thepauperedchef.com/2009/04/the-butter-steak-whats-the-best-way-to-cook-a-steak.html

i didn't manage to get that crust like he got, but the steak was pretty perfectly medium-rare and delicious. that being said, i just don't think a pan steak has the character or flavor of a good grilled steak. yeah, i can't make a pan sauce. who cares? i'm not french. i very rarely cook french. if i really needed a sauce i could start with dark chicken stock and add the juices from the rested meat. viola!

give me my grill any day.
